Families of patients at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance can be assured that if their loved ones registered as organ donors, those requests will be honoured even though the small facilities don't handle transplants.
President and CEO Colin Patey marked organ and tissue donation awareness week by pointing to training and increased staff ability to deal with the sensitive issues.
"It is our role to identify the potential donors from our patient population and in November and December we completed that to 100%," he says. "We then engage with the families, the grieving families in the sensitive way in which the staff have been trained to do so, and then we get in touch with the Trillium Gift of Life group."
The Trillium Gift of Life Network then brings in specially trained teams to deal with the organs.
