Ferry Rates Could Still Rise

Rate increases could still be on the way for the Walpole Island-Algonac Ferry.

Policy Analyst for Walpole Island Council James Jenkins says the ferry board agreed to postpone a scheduled increase of $3 per trip for passenger vehicles after council members raised some concerns.

"There had been some questions by community members and council, but ultimately the discussion at the council table was to just to ensure the decision was made on a profit analysis," says Jenkins. "I think now that council and the ferry board have had this discussion, there is much more understanding going forward."

Jenkins says his understanding is that the scheduled increase from $7 per trip to $10 was based on the need to generate profits or at least break even going forward. The ferry board will meet again on May 7 to discuss a possible rate increase.
