Regional Policing Idea Prompts Talks

Talks of a regional police service covering Chatham-Kent and the Town of Essex are in the early stages.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope says the preliminary talks involve members of council and not the police services. "How can we share services, not only in policing and other ways that we can minimize our costs, but at the same time get the adequate service that we're all looking for," says Hope. He says a proper business plan and cost analysis haven't been done yet.

Hope adds the municipality would have to ensure taxpayers aren't negatively affected and the quality of service is maintained.

While Chatham-Kent has a municipal police service, the Town of Essex has a contract with the OPP.
