Citizens Learn About Local Policing

A select number of Chatham-Kent residents will start working their way through the Citizens Police Academy in Chatham tonight.

This year's class consists of 30 people who were chosen from a large group of applications that police received earlier this year.

"It's meant to create ambassadors for the police service and show the community that there's more to policing than just pulling people over and giving them tickets," says Detective Constable Shawn Mungar, adding that they have a lot of interest every year. "We get 100 plus applications for it... everybody from kids who are in police foundations programs to the elderly who are very interested in what the police department does for them."

The academy runs for 11 weeks with classes held Tuesday nights.
