The City of Windsor is hiring a Toronto-based lawyer to fight the twinning of the Ambassador Bridge.
An environmental assessment has entered the public comment phase. Over the next 60 days, members of the public, including the city, can submit their comments on a proposed double span.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says city council voted unanimously to hire David Estrin, who has represented in the city in the past on border matters, including the fight leading up to the approval of the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Pkwy. Dilkens won't say how much the city is paying for Estrin's services, saying eventually, the figure will be released to the public.
Dilkens says it's an important legal case, and council wanted someone with experience in the city's corner. "There's no precedent under the International Bridges and Tunnels Act for these types of applications."
The city and the Detroit International Bridge Company has locked horns multiple times over plans to build a new plaza at the foot of the Ambassador Bridge. City lawyers have argued the project will hurt Sandwich Towne. Dilkens says if the application moves to the next phase, the city will need to be at the table to talk about measures to mitigate impacts on the west end neighbourhood.
Dilkens also encourages the public to participate in the public consultation phase of the application process too. "We would encourage residents who have concerns to take the time, put those concerns down in writing or an email and submit them as part of the process. Every concern is important."
