Tunnel Reopens, Smoke Bomb Found (Gallery)

A smoke bomb was discovered inside a car attempting to cross the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Tuesday night.

At the time, border guards didn't know what the item was, which prompted them to shut down the tunnel for four hours.

Canadian Border Services Agency officers pulled two Michigan men into secondary inspection and found a bag with a suspicious package inside.

Windsor police Sgt. Matthew D'Asti says that's when border guards called police. "They initially saw what they saw, they made the call. They closed the tunnel and notified police immediately," says D'Asti. "These individuals are being detained under the authority of the CBSA. They had to get them out of there for their safety."

After using a robot to access the package, police learned it was an unmarked cardboard cylinder with an attached fuse. Police say the device is a commercial grade smoke bomb or smoke grenade that emits a thick cloud of smoke when ignited.

Windsor police say two suspects are currently being detained.

Officers also seized brass knuckles, a switchblade knife, and a butterfly knife.
