New Three-Bag Limit

The garbage bag limit for curbside pick-up in Chatham-Kent is changing for the first time in nine years.

Manager of Waste and Recycling Services Rick Kucera says starting today, garbage trucks will only take three bags instead of four. "In addition to that, we're also banning the collection of electronic waste and used tires at the curb. There are plenty of take-back options or opportunities in the community for those materials."

He adds there is value to those materials so the last place they need to end up is in the landfill.

Kucera also points to changes in the recycling program that should help offset the reduced bag limit. "Going to a free blue box policy, but also the larger blue boxes, in that they are now 22 U.S. gallon. Obviously quite a bit more capacity than the ones that were provided back in, well, ten and 11 years ago, respectively."
