One Chatham-Kent councillor is calling out his colleagues for breaking promises made during the last election.
Chatham-Kent Council recently voted in favour of spending $105,000 to upgrade the audio and visual equipment and the electronic voting system in council chambers.
Chatham (Ward 6) Councillor Doug Sulman says that goes against the 0% tax increase that others recently promised taxpayers. "There are a lot of things that may be needed, but if we're going to get to a zero tax increase ... the first opportunity to spend people vote in favour of spending," says Sulman. "There's going to have to be some tough decisions made. My concern is that if you made promises during the election, then you had the talk now it's time to do the walk."
Sulman and Councillor David VanDamme were the two who voted against the motion. "So if we're willing to spend on things that assist council and administration, we're not looking out for taxpayers the way I think we should," says Sulman.
