A Chatham family is still picking up the pieces after an alleged drunk driver slammed into the front of their Chippewa Dr. home.
Chatham-Kent police say a 17-year-old youth was arrested and charged with impaired driving, vehicle theft and failing to remain at the scene of an accident Saturday night.
Homeowner Alana Francis says luckily nobody was injured, but it could have been much worse. "My husband and I will sometimes sit on our porch at night. We didn't last night, but it wouldn't be odd on a Saturday night for us to sit out there," says Francis. "We have a little table and chairs out front. Thank goodness nothing worse happened."
In addition to a broken front door and shattered windows, Francis says it appears there's also some structural damage to the house. "It was a bit of panic. I just hollered for my husband," says Francis. "The glass shattering was the loudest and the shaking of the house. The car had the radio on extremely loud and it sounded like it was in the house."
Given the fact that nobody was hurt, Francis says she has mixed emotions about the crash. "(I'm) angry that he was so reckless, but he is 17 and I guess some kids go the wrong way," she says. "I almost feel a little bad for him."
