Ontario Beekeepers Now Have Production Insurance Option

Bees have become the first Ontario commodity other than crops and perennial plants covered by the provincial production insurance program.

The new Bee Mortality Production Insurance Plan goes into effect November 1st, administered by Agricorp.

Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says the plan promotes best management practices and allows farmers to manage their risk more effectively.

The government says it provides the province’s beekeepers with the same financial support beekeepers in other provinces are getting.

Ontario Beekeepers Association President Tibor Szabo says the plan recognizes the importance of healthy bees to the livelihood of individual beekeepers and the sustainability of the beekeeping industry.

To participate in the plan, beekeepers must be registered – operate in accordance ewith the Bees Act – and implement best practices to ensure bee health.
