Canadian hog slaughter is running almost 3 per cent ahead of last year.
Agriculture and AgriFood Canada figures show federal and provincial slaughter so far this year has topped 12 million 600 head.
Live hog exports to the U-S are up 12 point 7 per cent so far this year while our overall pork imports are up 4 point 4 per cent.
The U-S hog slaughter is also up on the year.
Ron Plain of the University of Missouri says last week’s more than 2 point 2 million head slaughter was up just over 11 per cent from the same week last year.
The national average U-S negotiated carcass price for direct delivered hogs was down over 21 dollars from a y ear ago.
Plain reports the U-S retail pork price was up 7 cents a pound in July to 3.77.
He says that’s the largest month to month gain since last August.
However, Plain says the U-S retail pork price in July was still 45 cents lower than the record set last September.
