Harness Racing Deal Almost Signed

Sources close to the horse racing industry say they’re close to inking a new five year funding deal with the Ontario Racing Commission.

The $400 million program to due to kick-in April 1st.  Hanover Raceway GM Gord Dougan says the result will be half the number of races for half the purse money in a smaller field of horses.

“That will put pressure on us to achieve our wagering goals,” says Dougan.  “Wagering fans like to have full fields and 12 races.  And we like that too because there is more money bet across eight horses than there would be across five and there is more money bet across 12 races than there is nine.”

There will be 15 Saturday night race dates in Hanover this year beginning May 17th.
